Big Hit
About This Machine
Big Hit, manufactured by Chicago Coin Machine Manufacturing Company in July 1952, is a single-player electro-mechanical pinball machine with a baseball theme, a subject that was popular among pinball designers throughout the 1950s. It was designed by the team of Jerry Koci, John Gore, and Al Schlappa.
Gameplay features two flippers for controlling the ball's trajectory, along with seven scoring bumpers, one pop bumper, two captive balls, and a kick-out hole. The playfield layout invites comparison to Chicago Coin's 'Whiz Kids', released the same year, and together the two games illustrate how the company reworked its designs during this period.
As a product of pinball's early flipper era, Big Hit reflects the transitional character of 1950s game design, when manufacturers were still discovering how flippers, bumpers, and captive balls could be combined into engaging play. While little else is documented about this particular title, its age and baseball charm make it an appealing find for collectors of vintage Chicago Coin games.
