About This Machine

Target Gallery, manufactured by Midway in November 1962, is an electro-mechanical, two-player 'Bat Game' with a carnival shooting-gallery theme. Rather than standard flippers, players bat the ball with the machine's bat mechanism, aiming to knock an errant ball into one of two horseshoe lanes; a shot that lands in the horseshoe is redirected into the triple outlanes. Nine hanging targets round out the shooting-gallery layout.

The game was produced in both Replay and Regular (Novelty Play) models. The two-player Replay version was first advertised in Cash Box in November 1962 and was reported the following month to be receiving 'terrific acceptance' from operators. The simpler Novelty version omitted the horseshoe lanes and outlanes and had no replay window on the backglass.

Little else about the machine's design credits has been documented, but its distinctive bat-and-horseshoe gameplay makes Target Gallery a notable oddity from Midway's early-1960s lineup.
