About This Machine

The Surfers pinball machine, designed by Ted Zale and manufactured by Bally in December 1967, is a single-player electromechanical machine known for its Zipper Flippers - a pair of lower flippers that can snap together to catapult the ball, adding a distinctive skill element to gameplay.

The game's third, upper flipper joins the two zipper flippers to give players a range of shot options. Three pop bumpers and seven mushroom bumpers keep the ball in fast, chaotic motion, while two kick-out holes offer scoring opportunities. Surfers can be played with 3, 5, or 7 balls, giving operators flexibility in game length. An add-a-ball-only export version was also released the same year.

The machine's 'Water Sports - Happiness' theme is reflected in artwork by Jerry Kelley, featuring surfboards, beach scenes, and other tropical imagery. With 908 units confirmed produced, Surfers is a comparatively scarce Bally title from the late 1960s, valued by collectors for its zipper flipper mechanism.
