Super Star
About This Machine
The Super Star pinball machine is an example of Chicago Coin's output during the mid-1970s, produced as an electro-mechanical (EM) game before the company's eventual shift toward solid-state technology. The game's Olympic Games theme was designed by Wendell McAdams, Jerry Koci, and Albin Peters, with artwork by Christian Marche.
Key gameplay features include two flippers, three pop bumpers, and two slingshots, which provided players with a range of options for clearing obstacles and scoring points. The layout is notable for its use of spinning targets and stand-up targets, as well as an action ring, and a right outlane ball return gate that added an element of strategy to gameplay. The game offered 3 or 5 ball play and was convertible to add-a-ball play.
The design and artwork on the Super Star are typical of Chicago Coin's output during this period, with bold colors built around its Olympic Games theme. A two-player version of the game was released as Chicago Coin's 'Olympics.' It remains an interesting piece of pinball history from the transition period between electromechanical and solid-state technology.
