Super Duo
About This Machine
The Super Duo, designed by Ed Krynski with art by Art Stenholm, was manufactured by Gottlieb in July 1967 as an add-a-ball export version of Gottlieb's own 'Super Score,' made for the Italian market. With 1,200 units confirmed produced, it's a distinctive piece of Gottlieb's export history.
Gameplay on the Super Duo features four flippers, four pop bumpers, a passive bumper, four standup targets, two kick-out holes, a rollunder, and a captive ball spinner, giving players a busy, multi-target layout for a two-player add-a-ball machine. The backglass artwork cleverly depicts three of Gottlieb's earlier replay games - 'Masquerade' (1966), 'Ship-Mates' (1964), and 'Bank-A-Ball' (1965) - with Italian text reading "Punteggio Massimo Raggiunto" ("Maximum High Score") on one of the depicted backboxes.
The Super Duo's white 'backglass' area let players record their high score with a grease pencil, a nod to its export market and add-a-ball format. Reportedly, the manufacturer's schematic calls for three bells and a knocker that are missing from some surviving examples. As an export cousin of Gottlieb's domestic 'Super Score,' the Super Duo is an interesting variant for collectors familiar with that title.
