Stingray
About This Machine
The Stingray, manufactured by Stern Electronics and released in December 1977, was an early solid-state pinball machine from the newly formed Stern company, carrying a Scuba Diving / Water Sports theme.
The Stingray's gameplay features are both challenging and rewarding. Players navigate three or five balls through a course filled with obstacles, including two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, and three standup targets. The 5-bank drop target is a notable feature, offering players multiple shot options to reach the highest score. The sound package, with four bells and a knocker, adds to the experience.
Stingray was designed by Roger Sharpe and Sam Stern, with Mike Kubin building the whitewood prototype. It was one of two 4-player Stern games with a switch to convert to 2-player operation (the other being Stars, the game that followed it in production). Stern produced 3,006 confirmed units of Stingray between December 1977 and March 1978.
