Star Light
About This Machine
The Star Light pinball machine, designed by Barry Oursler and released in June 1984 by Williams Electronics, came fairly late in the solid-state era — Williams had been building SS games since the late 1970s — running on the company's System 7 platform (some units were also built on System 9). With only 100 confirmed units produced, Star Light is one of the more limited-production Williams machines of the 1980s.
Key gameplay elements include two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, 11 standup targets, a kick-out hole, a spinning target, and 2-ball multiball play. A separate lane-change button on the right side of the cabinet adds an extra layer of strategy to gameplay, along with four solenoid-controlled flash lamps in the backbox.
Star Light's theme sends players into a fantastical realm of outer space and wizardry, with playfield and plastics art by Larry Blazek and backglass art by Tom Schmelzer. Its playfield layout invites comparison to Williams' 1979 wide-body machine Laser Ball. Given its low production numbers, Star Light is a sought-after piece for collectors today.
