Star Wars
About This Machine
The Star Wars pinball machine, designed by John Borg and manufactured by Data East Pinball beginning October 15, 1992, is a licensed take on the original Star Wars trilogy. Its backglass, by artist Markus Rothkranz, blends imagery from all three films with an animated R2-D2 unit and Death Star, plus speaker cutouts painted to resemble the Death Star.
From a gameplay perspective, Star Wars offers two flippers, four pop bumpers, two slingshots, five standup targets, two scoops, a 3-bank drop target, a single drop target (identified in the manual as a 'bar target' guarding the Death Star), and a vertical up-kicker. A distinctive touch is its "Up/Down shifter" mounted on the front of the cabinet, used in place of a traditional plunger knob.
With 10,400 confirmed units produced, this remains one of the more recognizable licensed pinball machines of the early 1990s, and voice actor Fred Young contributed character voice work to the game's sound package.
