About This Machine

This 1971 Gottlieb pinball machine, despite sharing its name with the famous TV show, has no apparent connection to the Star Trek franchise. It is actually a conversion of Gottlieb's own Astro, produced for export to Italy in March 1971, with a generic outer-space fantasy theme. Designed by Ed Krynski with art by Gordon Morison, it is a single-player, electro-mechanical Add-A-Ball machine.

Gameplay is driven by two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, and eight standup targets, accompanied by a 3-tone chime unit for sound. Interestingly, the export flyer for the Italian market omitted the word "flipper" from its card holder art (a requirement for Italian games of the period) and included a Ball In Play counter, while the USA production cabinets show the opposite: card holders referencing "flipper buttons" but no Ball In Play counter.

With 1,450 confirmed units produced, this Star Trek remains a curiosity for collectors — not for any tie to the sci-fi franchise, but as an Astro variant built specifically for the Italian export market.
