Spot Pool
About This Machine
Spot Pool, designed by Ed Krynski and manufactured by Gottlieb in March 1976, is an Add-A-Ball billiards-themed game produced during the twilight years of Gottlieb's electro-mechanical lineup, even as solid-state technology was already spreading across the industry. It offers a glimpse into a design philosophy where mechanical complexity and tactile gameplay still defined much of the pinball market.
At its core, Spot Pool is a billiards-themed game with two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, three standup targets, and two kick-out holes. An end-of-ball bonus and wedge-head cabinet round out the package, while the maximum displayed point score of 1,999,990 points gives skilled players a lofty target to chase.
Spot Pool is notable as the export version of Gottlieb's 'Bank Shot' (its replay counterpart was sold as 'Sure Shot'), made specifically for the Italian market with 762 confirmed units produced. Its use of traditional EM components gives the game a distinct charm, with artist Gordon Morison's classic Gottlieb-era visuals and stylized pool table graphics rounding out a machine that captures the mechanical intricacies of its period.
