Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends
About This Machine
Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends, designed by Tim Seckel for Data East Pinball (1993), is a beloved addition to the cartoon-themed pinball machines. With a confirmed production run of 5,500 units, it is one of several notable Data East titles from the early 1990s, showcasing the company's playful approach to game design during its heyday. Kevin O'Connor provided the artwork, with music and sound by Brian Schmidt.
The gameplay is where Rocky and Bullwinkle truly shines. Key features include three pop bumpers that provide quick scoring opportunities, two slingshots that keep the ball moving unpredictably, and seven standup targets that challenge players to aim carefully, along with a 5-bank of drop targets, two vertical up-kickers, a subway, and a left outlane kickback. The machine's 3-ball multiball mode adds an extra layer of excitement as players juggle three balls in play while trying to complete objectives. The unique mechanical backbox animation is a standout feature — Bullwinkle pulls from his hat either Rocky, a rhino, or a lion, adding a whimsical touch to the gameplay experience.
The machine's cartoon theme and colorful artwork perfectly capture the spirit of the classic animated series. With its mix of humor, challenge, and engaging mechanics, Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends is an attractive addition to any pinball collection. Notably, at the demand of a French distributor, some games were shipped with black cabinets instead of the normal blue, and examples of these black-cabinet games have turned up in England, Canada, Italy, and the United States.
