The Amazing Spider-Man
About This Machine
The Amazing Spider-Man, designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Gordon Morison, was released by D. Gottlieb & Company in May 1980 during the company's stint as a Columbia Pictures Industries subsidiary. As a licensed theme machine built around the popular Marvel superhero, it reflects the industry's growing embrace of recognizable characters and franchises. This Solid State Electronic widebody predates Stern's own Spider-Man pinball, which wasn't released until 2007.
The game boasts an impressive array of features, including four flippers, two pop bumpers, two slingshots, and three kick-out holes, making it a challenging and engaging play experience. A 5-bank drop target and a 3-bank drop target offer varied scoring opportunities, while the spinning target adds an extra layer of strategy to the gameplay. A star rollover rounds out the shot menu.
With approximately 7,625 units produced, The Amazing Spider-Man is a fairly well-distributed Gottlieb widebody from the early 1980s, and its comic-book license makes it a distinctive and sought-after title among collectors of licensed-theme pinball.
