About This Machine

Space Station, conceived and designed by Barry Oursler for Williams Electronics Games in December 1987, is a Solid State Electronic pinball machine built on the System 11B platform, with art by Tim Elliott and music/sound by Brian Schmidt.

Gameplay is characterized by fast-paced action, with three pop bumpers, two slingshots, and 15 stand-up targets requiring precision and strategy. The machine features a mini-playfield reached by a wireform ramp, two vertical up-kickers, a 3-bank drop target, and a left outlane kickback. Its 3-ball multiball mode awards a bonus ball to all qualifying players after the last ball, and speech (voiced by Steve Ritchie) adds to the game's presentation.

The Space Station's outer space theme is brought to life with a turning space station model and a double general illumination system that shifts from white to green during multiball. Notably, the game lacks flipper inlanes, which demands greater precision from players. Artist Tim Elliott's translite depicts three space shuttles, a detail with a poignant backstory: he was painting the artwork when the real Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred in January 1986. With 3,804 confirmed units produced, Space Station stands as a distinctive entry in Williams' late-1980s lineup.
