Space Mission
About This Machine
Space Mission, designed by Steve Kordek and manufactured by Williams Electronics in January 1976, is a four-player electromechanical (EM) game with an outer space theme. Its backglass art was derived from a NASA photograph, likely the work of noted space artist Robert McCall.
Notable gameplay features include an End-of-Ball bonus, two flippers, two pop bumpers, two kick-out holes, two ball kickers, two stand-up targets, a swinging target, and a spinning target. The machine's layout uses these elements to challenge players' aim and timing as they work toward a maximum displayed score of 199,990 points per player.
Space Mission was a strong seller for Williams, with 11,652 units produced, and a two-player version of the same game was released as Space Odyssey. Some units were built with steel cabinets instead of the standard cabinet material, of which roughly 200 are believed to have been made. Measuring 272 pounds with legs attached, Space Mission is a solid example of Williams' EM output during this period.
