Space Invaders
About This Machine
The Space Invaders pinball machine, designed by Jim Patla and released by Bally Manufacturing Corporation in April 1980, brought the popular arcade game's theme to the world of pinball. This solid-state electronic (SS) widebody pinball machine offers players an immersive experience that combines fantasy and outer space themes.
One of the standout features of Space Invaders is its extensive array of interactive elements, including four flippers, three pop bumpers, four passive bumpers, two slingshots, six stand-up targets, a 3-bank drop target, a solitary drop target, a spinning target, and a captive ball. The machine's design also includes an animated infinity light display behind the specially-mirrored backglass, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The gameplay is equally engaging, with features like the horseshoe lane adding to the excitement.
Space Invaders drew on the iconic 1978 arcade game by Taito, with some playfield art elements and game sounds borrowed from that video game, which was still popular when this pinball machine came out. The backglass alien artwork was also later deemed an unlicensed use of the creature design from the 1979 film Alien. Interestingly, the machine's scoring system ensures that a player's final score always ends in 00 or 50 unless they tilt before certain bumper hits fully register, adding a subtle layer of strategy. With 11,400 units produced, Space Invaders remains a sought-after title among pinball enthusiasts and collectors.
