About This Machine

Solar Ride, designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Gordon Morison, was manufactured by D. Gottlieb & Company starting in February 1979. Built on Gottlieb's System 1 solid-state platform, which the company had introduced a couple of years earlier, Solar Ride carries an outer-space theme with graphics evocative of the late-1970s space-age aesthetic.

Gameplay features three flippers, three pop bumpers, two kick-out holes, a 5-bank of drop targets, and an upper-right return-ball roll-under. This combination of EM-era carryover elements like kick-out holes with newer solid-state scoring gave the machine a blend of familiar and modern play mechanics.

With 8,800 units confirmed produced, Solar Ride was a commercially significant release for Gottlieb, and it remains a well-represented example of the company's early solid-state output for collectors and enthusiasts today.
