Silverball Mania
About This Machine
Silverball Mania, designed by Jim Patla with art by Kevin O'Connor, was manufactured by Bally in February 1980. By this point solid-state electronics were already well established in the pinball industry, but Silverball Mania stood out for its inventive backglass carry-over feature and clever ball-return engineering. Its unique blend of sports, fantasy, and pinball-themed artwork captured the imagination of players and collectors alike.
At its core, Silverball Mania is a game that rewards strategy and skill. The machine's wireforms and kicker mechanism allow for complex routing: going through the horseshoe lane or top center rollover when lit turns an outlane below the flippers into a kicker that propels an otherwise drained ball back onto the playfield, and balls exiting the left or right outlanes can be nudged onto wireforms that route them to this same outlane/kicker. This adds an extra layer of challenge and excitement to gameplay.
The game's artwork and design are equally impressive. The backglass carries a carry-over feature that awards a bonus for completing S-I-L-V-E-R-B-A-L-L, while the playfield is populated with 11 standup targets, 2 slingshots, 3 pop bumpers, and 4 passive bumpers, creating a busy, immersive environment. One of the playfield plastics even features a chrome drawing of artist Kevin O'Connor's own Jeep Cherokee, and reflections in some of the silver balls are said to depict O'Connor himself. With 10,350 units produced, Silverball Mania has become a collector's item, sought after for its artistry and engineering.
