Beauty
About This Machine
Beauty, manufactured by Bally in May 1940, is a single-player flipperless electro-mechanical game from the pre-flipper era of pinball, when playfields relied on bumpers and skillful ball launching rather than player-controlled flippers.
Key to Beauty's operation is its five-ball setup, where players could enjoy a full game session for just five cents. The inclusion of 19 passive bumpers adds an element of challenge and unpredictability, requiring players to place their shots carefully to maximize their scoring potential. Notably, the number of games won by a player is projected onto the backglass, creating a dynamic visual display.
A knock-off switch located on the bottom right side of the cabinet rounds out the machine's mechanical design. As an example of pre-war flipperless pinball, Beauty offers a fascinating glimpse into the industry before its transition toward more complex, player-controlled gameplay.
