Shindig
About This Machine
The 1953 D. Gottlieb & Company electro-mechanical machine Shindig is a single-player game with a Music/Dancing theme, produced in September 1953 with a run of 1,200 units. It uses reverse flippers, a mechanism that offers a different feel from standard flipper placement.
Shindig's gameplay is built around three pop bumpers, six passive bumpers, two slingshots, eight trap holes, and two rollunders, creating a dynamic experience that challenges players to master its varied mechanisms. A rollover button adds an extra layer of strategy, as players must carefully time their shots to maximize points.
Designed by Wayne Neyens with artwork by Roy Parker, Shindig carries some unresolved history: known surviving images attributed to Russ Jensen show cabinet and coin door artwork that doesn't match the game shown in the manufacturer's flyer, and the coin door art appears to match Gottlieb's 'Jockey Club' from April 1954 rather than any other known Shindig documentation -- a small mystery that adds to its collector interest.
