Select-A-Card
About This Machine
Select-A-Card, designed by Harry Mabs with artwork by Roy Parker, was manufactured by D. Gottlieb & Company in April 1950. By this point flippers — introduced industry-wide in 1947 — were a well-established feature, and Select-A-Card's two flippers reflect the gameplay conventions Gottlieb and its competitors had settled into by the start of the 1950s.
One of the most notable aspects of Select-A-Card is its turret shooter, which let players aim and shoot balls directly at targets, adding an element of strategy and challenge. The game offers five shots for five cents and combines passive bumpers with ten standup targets for a fast-paced scoring layout. Its playfield has been compared to that of Gottlieb's Just 21, released the same year.
With 1,500 units produced, Select-A-Card is a representative example of Gottlieb's early-1950s single-player EM output, showcasing the turret-shooter mechanic that made it a distinctive design within the company's catalog.
