Satellite
About This Machine
The Satellite, designed by Harry Mabs (Williams' original playfield drawings, dated November 1957, are signed by Mabs, correcting earlier records that credited Harry Williams) and produced by Williams Manufacturing Company in June 1958, is an early example of an outer-space-themed EM pinball machine -- a theme that felt especially timely just months after the launch of Sputnik.
The machine offers a full complement of features for its era: two flippers, three pop bumpers, four passive bumpers, two slingshots, two gobble holes, a kick-out hole, and a standup target, played over five balls per game rather than the more common three.
Artist George Molentin's futuristic artwork depicts celestial imagery befitting the Space Age theme. Specific production numbers and contemporary reception are not documented, but the Satellite remains a notable EM machine from the late 1950s space-race era.
