Beach Club
About This Machine
Beach Club, designed by Don Hooker for Bally Manufacturing Corporation, is a bingo machine, the flipperless, card-based genre that Bally dominated in the 1950s. Rather than flipping a ball at targets, the player shoots balls into a field of trap holes, trying to light numbers in winning patterns on a bingo card displayed on the backglass.
The playfield carries 25 trap holes and two rollover buttons, and the backglass offers One Card plus Two Super Cards, along with Select-a-spot and Center Card Corners features. Beach Club also gives the player a measure of control: by turning the Selector Knob on the front of the cabinet, a lit number on the backglass can be selected before shooting the fourth or fifth ball, provided those features have been purchased for that game.
With its sunny beach theme, Beach Club is a characteristic example of Don Hooker's bingo designs for Bally, and an interesting piece for collectors drawn to this once-hugely-popular branch of the coin-op world.
