Safari
About This Machine
The Safari, designed by Ted Zale and manufactured by Bally in May 1968, is a two-player electro-mechanical (EM) pinball machine notable as Bally's first two-player flipper game since 1966, according to a 1968 Cash Box report. It is an early example of a hunting/safari-themed pinball machine.
The Safari features an array of notable gameplay elements, including two flippers, three pop bumpers, one passive bumper (mounted between the flippers), four mushroom bumpers, and a right outlane ball return gate, along with a detour gate in the upper right ball lane. Each player has access to an extra score reel for Super Scoring, with lit "TIGER" or "TRAIL" awards triggering a Super Score; the maximum displayed point score is 9,999 points per player, with a Super Score display of up to nine.
The Safari's backglass features a tiger wearing a sign referencing the "Put a Tiger in your Tank" advertising slogan popularized by Humble Oil (Esso) in the mid-1960s. The game's sound package includes two bells and a knocker. With 1,100 confirmed units produced, the Safari remains a notable and relatively scarce piece of late-1960s Bally history.
