Play boy
About This Machine
The Rally Play Company's 1967 "Play boy" pinball machine (spelled "play boy" on the manufacturer's schematic, "Play boy" on the backglass, and "PLAY-BOY" on the French flyer) is a two-player electro-mechanical (EM) game manufactured in Nice, France in November 1967. Its playfield design is identical to Rally's 1968 machine Comics.
Notable features of Play boy include its 2 flippers, 18 star rollovers, a center up-post, and spinning posts. According to IPDB, this is the first known example from any manufacturer to have a round up-post positioned between the flippers. The machine's Nixie tube electronic scoring system is a highlight, allowing for a dynamic and precise display of player scores, although there is no electronic logic in the game's features - the electronics power the scoring display and an electronic sound card only.
Little is documented about the machine's designer, art, or theme, but its distinctive center up-post mechanism marks its place in pinball history as an early example of an idea that would become common on later machines.
