Roller Derby
About This Machine
Roller Derby, designed by Don Hooker for Bally Manufacturing Corporation, is a single-player electro-mechanical bingo machine with a roller-skating sports theme. Rather than the flippers found on standard pinball games, it uses 25 trap holes along with the Magic Screen, Pick-A-Play Buttons (red, green, and blue), and the OK Feature to determine play, in keeping with Bally's bingo-style machines of the era.
The Magic Screen, a Bally innovation, allows for dynamic graphics to be shown on the playfield, adding an extra layer of visual interest to gameplay. The Pick-A-Play Buttons let players choose from multiple possible plays, introducing an element of strategy, while the OK Feature rewards players for completing specific combinations of trap holes.
Roller Derby's design and artwork are characteristic of Bally's aesthetic during this period, featuring bold colors and dynamic graphics that evoke the energy and speed of roller skating. As one of Don Hooker's roller-skating themed designs for Bally, Roller Derby is a notable addition to any collection focused on the bingo-machine era of electro-mechanical gameplay and design.
