About This Machine

Radical! is a solid-state electronic pinball machine from 1990, designed by Dan Langlois and Peter Perry (concept by Dan Langlois) with artwork by John Youssi, manufactured by Midway Manufacturing Company (under the Bally trade name) and running on the Williams System 11C platform. Built around a skateboarding theme, it arrived as extreme sports were rising in popularity in American youth culture in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The gameplay features four flippers, four pop bumpers, two slingshots, three ramps, two spinning targets, two banks of three drop targets, and two ball diverters, along with a left-side kicker lane, a left outlane kickback, and 2-ball multiball -- rewarding players who can master its combo shots and ramp play. The number of balls per game was operator-adjustable from one to nine.

Radical!'s design and artwork are tied closely to its skateboarding theme, with vibrant graphics evoking the action-sports style of the era. Approximately 1,328 units were produced during its short production run in mid-to-late 1990. Its exact influence on later pinball titles and its industry reception are not well documented, but its skateboarding theme remains a distinctive entry in the pinball catalog of the early 1990s.
