Barrel O’ Fun ‘62
About This Machine
Barrel O' Fun '62 is a bingo machine from Bally Manufacturing Corporation, designed by Don Hooker. Despite the pinball-style cabinet, bingo machines play very differently: rather than using flippers, players launch balls and try to land them in trap holes to light numbers on card grids displayed in the backglass. As the name and its sibling machine suggest, it dates from the early 1960s - the non-replay version of this same game is Bally's 1961 'Fun Spot '62', while Barrel O' Fun '62 is the free play (replay) model.
The playfield features an impressive 25 trap holes, and the backglass presents six bingo cards. Players could feed in up to six coins per game to activate additional cards and scoring options, a hallmark of the bingo genre. Its theme evokes the amusement park and carnival midway, fitting the lighthearted 'Barrel O' Fun' name.
A few physical details distinguish this machine: the cabinet has metal side rails, the backglass notably omits the usual 'Bally' logo, and the machine is substantial, with an actual measured weight of 225 pounds including legs. For collectors of Bally's long-running bingo line, it offers a well-documented snapshot of the genre at the start of the 1960s.
