Pastime
About This Machine
The Pastime, manufactured by J. H. Keeney and Company Incorporated in December 1938, is an example of early electro-mechanical (EM) pinball from the pre-flipper era. Keeney was an established Chicago manufacturer of coin-operated amusement devices during this period.
As with most pre-1947 pinball games, Pastime predates the invention of the flipper, so gameplay relied on tilting, plunging, and other manual skill rather than flipper control. The emphasis on player timing and touch, rather than flipper-based shot-making, is typical of games from this era.
Little documentation survives about Pastime's specific artwork or theme, which is common for games this old. Its age and scarcity make it a piece of interest to historians and collectors of early pinball.
