About This Machine

The Palm Springs pinball machine, designed by Don Hooker and manufactured by Bally, is a bingo-style electro-mechanical (EM) machine with a swimming-themed take on the American Places category. Its exact production year is not documented. Notably, it uses a pricing model of five balls for five cents, a scheme once common in bingo pinball but long since disappeared.

The Palm Springs includes 25 trap holes along with One Card, Two Super Cards, a Select-a-Spot feature, and a Hold Feature, layering several scoring options typical of Bally's bingo machines of the era. If the optional feature is purchased, players can also turn a Selector Knob on the front of the cabinet before shooting the fourth ball to select a lit number on the backglass for additional scoring potential.

The Palm Springs' theme and artwork reflect the American Places category with a swimming motif, though little further documentation survives about its design or promotional history. Its layered feature set is characteristic of Bally's bingo-machine catalog and makes it a notable piece for collectors of that genre.
