OXO
About This Machine
The OXO, designed by Norm Clark and manufactured by Williams Electronics in August 1973, is a four-player electro-mechanical pinball machine built around a tic-tac-toe theme, with artwork by Christian Marche. A two-player companion, "Triple X," was designed but never went into production; Bally Midway would revisit similar territory over a decade later with 1984's "X's & O's."
The game's two flippers, three pop bumpers, and two slingshots provide fast, physical gameplay, while its central tic-tac-toe matrix — lit from underneath — ties the action back to the game's theme. Two kick-out holes and three standup targets round out the scoring options, feeding into an end-of-ball bonus.
OXO's art and design are quintessential early-1970s Williams, with bold colors and graphics typical of the era. With over 7,000 units produced, it was a commercially successful machine, and its tic-tac-toe theme remains a distinctive and memorable hook among electro-mechanical pinball games of the period.
