Outer Space
About This Machine
Outer Space, designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Gordon Morison, was released by D. Gottlieb & Company in January 1972. It's the two-player companion to the four-player "Orbit," released a few months earlier in December 1971, and the two games share the same outer-space theme and largely the same playfield layout.
The game's features include two flippers, three pop bumpers, a slingshot, three standup targets, a vari-target, and a spinning target. An upper-right ball-return rollunder and a right outlane ball-return gate keep balls in play longer, feeding into an end-of-ball bonus that can reach up to 99,990 points per player.
The art and design of Outer Space are striking, featuring illustrations of planets, stars, and spaceships across the playfield and backglass, consistent with Gottlieb's outer-space themed games of the early 1970s. As a well-preserved example of Ed Krynski's electro-mechanical design work for Gottlieb, Outer Space remains a solid piece for collectors interested in the era's space-age pinball aesthetic.
