About This Machine

The Old Plantation, manufactured by J. H. Keeney and Company Incorporated in 1961 and designed by Ed Krynski, is a flipperless electro-mechanical game with a Confederate American South theme. It is essentially a slot machine with a flipperless pinball playfield attached: inserting a coin loads a ball into the shooter lane while three Panascope windows on the head unit roll out a sequence of symbols, with a player-adjustable dial controlling how often a 'winning' sequence appears. If a winning sequence lands, the player must then shoot the ball to reach a minimum pinball score to collect the winning credits, with higher scores advancing the value of the win.

The pinball portion of the game features three pop bumpers and six passive bumpers, but is deliberately designed to fall within a narrow, near-impossible scoring range, making the slot-reel outcome the real focus of play. The game also has a plumb-bob tilt and a slam-switch tilt; triggering either ends the game instantly with no credit subtraction, since there are no flippers to control the ball's fate. Player credits are tracked on backglass reels rather than paid out directly, with operators typically wiring in a manual reset switch to zero out credits after a location 'cashed out' a player.

Old Plantation's Confederate-era Southern theme and its Panascope-driven gambling mechanics make it a distinctive - if ethically fraught by modern standards - artifact of early-1960s coin-operated amusement, illustrating how closely pinball and slot-machine technology were once intertwined.
