O'Boy
About This Machine
The O, produced by Chicago Coin Machine Manufacturing Company in November 1939 (model 74), is a flipperless electro-mechanical (EM) pinball machine with a confirmed production run of 1,700 units. As a flipperless game, scoring depended entirely on how the ball was launched and where it fell among the playfield's features, rather than on player-controlled flippers, which would not become standard in pinball for another eight years.
Gameplay on the O centers on 10 spring bumpers, which score points and add unpredictability as the ball ricochets across the playfield. Its straightforward mechanical layout is typical of pre-flipper pinball, where the game's challenge came from the arrangement of bumpers and holes rather than active shot-making.
Little additional documentation survives about the O's specific artwork or designer, but as a confirmed production from a major manufacturer of the era, it offers a glimpse of the pinball industry in the years just before the flipper reshaped the game.
