Nugent
About This Machine
Nugent, designed by Mike Kubin, was manufactured by Stern Electronics in November 1978 as a four-player solid-state machine with a celebrities-and-music theme, its backglass and playfield artwork depicting singer Ted Nugent based on imagery from the cover of his Weekend Warriors album. With 2,437 confirmed domestic units produced (plus additional knock-down kits assembled under license in Australia by LAI), it was a solid mid-run release for Stern during the early solid-state era.
Gameplay features three flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, a pair of 3-bank drop targets, a kick-out hole, a spinning target, a standup target, and a free ball return lane behind the upper flipper, along with the mini-post screw between the flippers common to several Stern games of the period. The game shares its ROM set with Stern's Lectronamo, released the same year, a quirk that also explains an unusual double-switch wiring detail on the left bank of drop targets.
With its bold, era-appropriate rock-poster artwork and solid, if unspectacular, feature set, Nugent stands as a fun snapshot of late-1970s Stern output and one of a number of licensed-celebrity pinball tie-ins from the period.
