Nudgy
About This Machine
Nudgy is a flipperless rolldown pinball machine manufactured by Bally, offering five balls for five cents — a generous coin-play arrangement for a game of its type. Its exact release year is not documented, but flipperless rolldown games like Nudgy were typical of the era before Bally introduced flippers with Melody in late 1947.
The machine's defining gameplay mechanic is nudging: a manual control on the right side of the cabinet lets the player jerk the playfield toward the rear, physically influencing the ball's path — a built-in version of the nudging technique players would otherwise apply by hand to the cabinet itself. The layout is completed by nine passive bumpers and four kick-out holes.
Nudgy was produced in two cabinet styles: a standard version and a rolldown version with a ball dispenser in place of a plunger. One surviving rolldown example shows evidence of having been repainted, with 'Special Reserve' wording covering an original 'All Scores Double' design, worn through in places to reveal the underlying text — likely an alteration made by the manufacturer or an operator to distinguish it from a payout-style machine. As operators of this era commonly retrofitted flipperless games like Nudgy once flippers became standard, complete original examples are of particular interest to collectors today.
