Night Rider
About This Machine
Night Rider, designed by Greg Kmiec with artwork by Paul Faris, was released by Bally in November 1976 as a four-player electro-mechanical machine with a trucking and transportation theme. It was produced in both EM and solid-state versions — this EM original followed by a solid-state edition in 1977 — with 4,155 confirmed units of the EM version produced.
The layout includes two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, three standup targets, two spinning targets, two 5-bank drop targets, and a kick-out hole, backed by an end-of-ball bonus. Its signature feature is the 'King of the Road' award: when a player's score exceeds 99,990 points, the backglass briefly flashes the words 'King Of The Road' with a buzzer, then lights a silkscreened '100,000' indicator as that player's score reels roll over to zero and scoring continues, up to a displayed maximum of 199,990 points per player.
Paul Faris's trucking-themed artwork gives the machine its visual identity, and the King of the Road rollover mechanic remains one of the more memorable scoring gimmicks of Bally's mid-1970s EM lineup.
