About This Machine

Mr. Evil is a solid-state pinball machine manufactured by Recel S.A. of Madrid, Spain in 1978, built around a Dracula-inspired 'Fictional Characters - Myth and Legend' theme. Recel was the export brand name used by the company; the same machine was sold domestically as Petaco's 'Mr. Evil,' and it shares its playfield layout with Recel's own 1979 release, Mr. Doom.

Gameplay features two flippers, two pop bumpers, two banks of 3-bank drop targets, two captive balls, and a single spinning target, all of which challenge players to navigate Dracula's lair with precise timing and strategy. A distinctive feature is its High Score To Beat (HSTB) system: it starts at a default of 1,000,000, updates whenever a final score exceeds it, and resets back to the default once the High Score To Beat exceeds 2,000,000.

The Dracula theme taps into a long-running vein of horror and Gothic fiction in pop culture. Limited information survives about the machine's design team, leaving enthusiasts to appreciate it mainly through its distinctive gameplay mechanics and its place in Recel's solid-state catalog.
