Monterrey
About This Machine
Monterrey, manufactured by United Manufacturing Company in May 1948, is a single-player electro-mechanical machine with a World Places theme. It arrived within a year of pinball's first flipper-equipped game (Gottlieb's Humpty Dumpty, released October 1947), placing it among the wave of early machines that adopted the new flipper technology once it proved popular, rather than being a true pioneer of the format.
The playfield features two flippers along with five kick-out holes, which redirect the ball unpredictably around the table and add variety to each play. Little further documentation survives about Monterrey's specific artwork or design details.
As an early adopter of flippers from United Manufacturing — a company that would remain a significant EM manufacturer into the early 1960s — Monterrey offers a useful snapshot of how quickly the industry embraced flipper-based gameplay after its 1947 introduction.
