Monte Carlo
About This Machine
Monte Carlo, designed by John Trudeau with photographic translite and print advertising work by Don Marshall, was manufactured by Premier Technology under the Gottlieb name in February 1987. Running on the Gottlieb System 80B platform with software by John Buras, this four-player solid-state machine leans into a glamorous casino theme, complete with a photographic translite shot on location at the Gaslight Club in Chicago — Alvin Gottlieb and Gil Pollock even appear in the background of the shot.
Gameplay is packed with hardware: two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, two 3-bank and two 2-bank drop targets, two rollunders, two standup targets, a captive ball spinner, and multiball, plus a challenging 10,000,000-point ramp shot. At a hefty 252 pounds with legs and topper included, it's a substantial machine both physically and in feature count.
While the identity of the playfield and cabinet artist remains undocumented — Don Marshall confirmed he handled only the translite and print advertising, and artist Larry Day has stated he did not work on this game — Monte Carlo stands as a feature-rich example of Gottlieb's late-1980s solid-state catalog.
