Monarch
About This Machine
The Monarch, manufactured by Bally in February 1933, is an early single-player pinball machine from the pure mechanical (PM) era — meaning it predates both electric scoring and flippers, neither of which would appear on any pinball machine until 1947. Players of the PM era scored purely through the mechanical action of a plunger-launched ball falling into scoring holes or lanes, without the flipper-based control that would later define the game.
Bally was one of the pioneering manufacturers of the young pinball industry in the early 1930s. Beyond its manufacture date and basic single-player specification, detailed information about Monarch's playfield layout, artwork, and original production numbers has not survived in the historical record.
As with many machines from pinball's earliest mechanical era, Monarch offers a window into the game's formative years, before the flippers, bumpers, and electrification that would come to define later machines.
