Maryland
About This Machine
The Maryland, manufactured by Williams in April 1949, is a single-player electro-mechanical machine themed around American Places. Its standout mechanical feature is a 'Controlled Scoring' system that changes playfield values depending on which ball is in play, a notable departure from simpler flat-scoring designs of the era.
The Maryland's gameplay includes two flippers, two pop bumpers, two passive bumpers, and two kick-out holes. A ball draining through any of the five outlanes increments a 'ball counting unit' that tracks balls played. At the start of a game, the two side lanes are lit for increased points and a Special; once the first ball drains, the side lanes go dark for the rest of the game. When the fourth ball drains, the rebound bumpers and kick-out holes light for increased values on the fifth ball, remaining lit until the player reaches either 4 million or 5 million points, depending on operator setting.
This layered scoring system gives Maryland a distinct rhythm across a five-ball game, rewarding players who can capitalize on the shifting value windows. It stands as an interesting example of Williams' late-1940s design work in the American Places series.
