Magic
About This Machine
Magic, designed by Mike Kubin with art by Bob Timm, was manufactured by Stern Electronics starting in August 1979, with 2,202 full units produced (plus 264 knock-down games, for 2,466 total). It's a four-player solid-state machine with a fantasy theme, and was also produced under license in Australia by LAI as their own 1979 'Magic.'
The playfield includes two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, four standup targets, four star rollovers, two spinning targets, a 3-bank of drop targets, and a kick-out hole, giving players a varied mix of shots and scoring opportunities typical of Stern's late-1970s output. Artist Bob Timm, working at Ad Posters at the time, created both the backglass and playfield art for the game, while cabinet art was handled separately at the cabinet maker.
Though not among Stern's best-remembered titles, Magic represents a solid example of the company's solid-state EM-to-SS transition era, with fantasy-themed artwork and a feature-rich layout for its time.
