Lot-O-Smoke
About This Machine
Lot-O-Smoke, designed by Harry Mabs and manufactured by Gottlieb in 1939, is a flipperless electro-mechanical pinball machine notable for its unusual promotional theme. It is essentially the same game as Gottlieb's 1939 'Lot-O-Fun,' modified to feature advertising for thirteen brands of non-filter cigarettes, from Camel and Lucky Strike to Pall Mall and Dunhill. The machine features 13 spring bumpers and one free play hole, offering a straightforward yet engaging gameplay experience.
What sets Lot-O-Smoke apart is its use of lighting effects to represent the various cigarette brands: each numbered bumper corresponds to a specific brand, illuminating a matching number on one of the four cards on the backglass. This feature not only showcases early experimentation with theme integration but also offers a fascinating glimpse into period tobacco advertising and its ties to coin-operated amusements.
The machine's design and art are characteristic of its time, with the backglass's four cards featuring cigarette brand names standing out as a notable example of period thematic artwork. As a variant of Lot-O-Fun made specifically for cigarette promotion, Lot-O-Smoke offers pinball collectors an unusual and historically interesting piece tied to the advertising practices of the late 1930s.
