Loch Ness Monster
About This Machine
The Loch Ness Monster, designed by Joe Kaminkow and Ed Cebula with software by Rehman Merchant, was Game Plan, Incorporated's final pinball machine, dated November 1985. It never reached production: Game Plan closed as the model was being prepared for manufacture, and reportedly only the single prototype exists, making it one of the rarest solid-state games ever built. The prototype was still shown in the Game Plan booth at the 1986 American Coin Machine Exposition in Chicago that March.
The game's signature feature is a moving three-dimensional model of the Loch Ness Monster mounted below the playfield, visible through a blue window in the playfield surface and lit with flashing lights, a genuinely novel toy for 1985. Around it, the four-player game offers two flippers, three pop bumpers, three 3-bank drop target sets, two star rollovers, a standup target, and a spinning target, with electronic sound plus a single bell, all running on the Game Plan MPU-2 board.
The artwork carries the game's fantasy, monsters, and scuba diving theme. Artist Kevin O'Connor recounted that he did the playfield art and the complete set of plastics, with Margaret Hudson as the production artist who hand-cut all the color separations from his color rendering; Seamus McLaughlin is also credited. As a one-of-a-kind prototype marking the end of Game Plan's run, the Loch Ness Monster is more a museum piece than a collectible, and a poignant footnote in pinball history.
