Jurassic Park
About This Machine
Jurassic Park, released by Data East Pinball in 1993, brought the excitement of Steven Spielberg's blockbuster movie to pinball enthusiasts worldwide. This solid-state electronic (SS) machine was designed by Joe Kaminkow, John Borg, and Ed Cebula, with artwork by Markus Rothkranz and software by Neil Falconer, Lonnie D. Ropp, and John Carpenter.
The machine boasts several innovative features that set it apart from other games of its time. Its three flippers allow for precise control over the ball's movement as players navigate through various modes and challenges, aided by three pop bumpers, a captive ball, an autoplunger, and a shaker motor that adds kinetic energy to the experience. Notable toys include a dinosaur that eats the ball and a kicking raptor. A "Smart Missile" button on the gun trigger scores all lit playfield features, an homage to the same feature in the Defender video game.
Visually, Jurassic Park's design and art are vivid representations of the film's iconic characters and environments, complete with dinosaur-themed toys and animations by Jack Liddon and Kurt Andersen. With 9,008 confirmed units produced, Jurassic Park was a commercially successful licensed title that helped cement Data East's place in the competitive early-1990s pinball market.
