Hold Over
About This Machine
Hold Over is a single-player electro-mechanical pinball machine manufactured by Stoner Manufacturing Company of Aurora, Illinois in November 1940. Built near the end of Stoner's run as a manufacturer (the company operated from 1933 to 1941), it comes from the pre-flipper era of pinball, when games relied on plunger skill and the luck of the bounce rather than player-controlled flippers.
Very little documentation survives about Hold Over. Its playfield features, artwork, theme, and designer are all unrecorded, which makes it something of an enigma among collectors and enthusiasts. That scarcity of information is itself part of the machine's story: Stoner ceased operations in 1941, and detailed records of many of its later products did not survive.
Despite the absence of information about its design or theme, Hold Over stands as a genuine artifact of pinball's formative years, and an intriguing piece for collectors seeking to understand and preserve the early history of the game.
