Heavyweight
About This Machine
Heavyweight, manufactured by Pacific Manufacturing Corporation in April 1937, is an electro-mechanical payout machine from the pre-flipper era of pinball. Pacific Manufacturing was active as a manufacturer only briefly, which makes any of its games an uncommon window into the coin-op business of the late 1930s.
Gameplay on Heavyweight is built around its 12 spring bumpers, a characteristic playfield element of the period, years before flippers arrived in 1947. As a payout machine, it dispensed awards to players rather than simply tallying a score, and it was also available in a ticket model for operators in jurisdictions where that format was preferred.
The scarcity of information on Heavyweight makes it something of an enigma among pinball enthusiasts. No designer or theme is credited, which is consistent with the sparse documentation typical of games from this era. As a surviving trace of a short-lived manufacturer, Heavyweight offers a glimpse into the payout side of pinball's formative years.
