Heavy Hitter
About This Machine
Heavy Hitter, manufactured by Bally in May 1947, is a baseball-themed bat game from the golden age of coin-operated amusements. Rather than a full-size pinball machine, it is a table top/counter game that could be operated on a countertop or with an optional floor stand, and it features mechanical backbox animation to bring its baseball action to life.
Gameplay is straightforward yet engaging. For 5 cents per play, players swing at balls with the game ending after three outs or four minutes of play. This simple structure mirrors the rhythm of real baseball while keeping games brisk for location operators.
An interesting documentation quirk surrounds the game's date: Bally's paperwork shows a project date of 02-02-48 for Model 488, yet the earliest trade advertisements in The Billboard and Cash Box date to May 1947, and Bally announced the game in a Cash Box article dated May 19, 1947. It is possible Bally's documentation meant to show 1947. Whatever the case, Heavy Hitter remains an intriguing relic from the counter-game era of coin-op history.
