About This Machine

Hearts and Spades is an electro-mechanical pinball machine from April 1969, designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Art Stenholm for D. Gottlieb & Company. A single-player add-a-ball game with a cards and gambling theme, it had a confirmed production run of 615 units, making it a relatively uncommon find today. Its replay counterpart is Gottlieb's 1969 'Spin-A-Card'.

The machine features two flippers, four pop bumpers, two slingshots, and a backglass adorned with ten spinning lights that add to the dynamic experience. The two kick-out holes are particularly noteworthy: both kick the ball back up the playfield, creating thrilling and unpredictable ball trajectories.

A distinctive cosmetic touch is the backbox, which has beaded side panels used on only a few different Gottlieb games produced in 1969. As one of the lesser-known titles from Gottlieb's catalog, Hearts and Spades is a hidden treasure for pinball enthusiasts looking to add a distinctive add-a-ball game to their collection.
