Hawaii
About This Machine
"Hawaii", manufactured by United Manufacturing Company in June 1954, is a bingo machine from the golden age of that format. Rather than flippers and bumpers, bingos challenged players to land balls in a grid of trap holes — 25 of them here — to complete winning lines on the bingo-style cards displayed in the backglass. United was among the leading bingo makers of the period, and Hawaii carries a genuine innovation: it marked the first use of "diamond diagonal center card scoring" on a United bingo.
Beyond the main card, the game offers two Super-Cards, a Lite-A-Name feature, diagonal scoring, and Super selection. Players who purchased the optional features could rotate a knob on the coin door to select from any lit "selection feature" in the backglass before shooting the fourth or fifth ball, adding an appealing layer of strategy and decision-making to each game.
With its Adventure - Travel theme conjuring images of a tropical paradise, Hawaii is an engaging example of the mid-1950s bingo machine at its most refined, and a window into a side of the coin-op industry that thrived alongside conventional pinball.
